EU Congo gold mining cooperation

2026-02-09

Recently, the mining industry in Africa has welcomed an important international cooperation.

On March 17th local time, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the European Union officially launched the PanAfGeo+Invest program, with a project investment of 17.8 million euros, aimed at enhancing geological capabilities, standardizing mining management, and promoting sustainable development of mineral resources.

This project is the third phase of the EU's flagship project, the Pan African Geological Program. Building on the successful experiences of the first two phases, it further focuses on capacity building, talent cultivation, and actual investment implementation. It is jointly promoted by the EU, the European Geological Survey Association, and African Geological Survey organizations. Congo (Kinshasa) has become the top demonstration country, with financial support far exceeding that of South Africa

In this plan, Congo (Kinshasa) was selected as the first demonstration country and received 17.8 million euros in special funding support from the European Union. As a comparison, South Africa only received 3.8 million euros, and the funding gap fully reflects the core position of Congo (Kinshasa) in the project. The total budget for the entire African continent project is 45.5 million euros, of which 6 million euros are used for the digital construction of the Royal Museum of Central Africa.

Three core directions: not only searching for minerals, but also strengthening the mining industry

PanAfGeo+Invest revolves around three major sectors:

Promote deep cooperation between European and African geological institutions

Strengthen professional training for local geological talents in Africa

• Support investment in the entire chain of mining, processing, and value-added in key mineral fields

The project also focuses on the manual mining industry to ensure employment and development for relevant groups.

The EU side stated that this plan is not just about mapping mineral distribution, but also about mapping development opportunities.

Congo (Kinshasa): Geological data is a tool for national sovereignty and development

The National Geological Bureau and mining department of the Democratic Republic of Congo have both stated that geological data is an important strategic tool for safeguarding national economic sovereignty.

Through more systematic and accurate geological information:

• Can fully grasp the mineral potential of the country

• Ability to scientifically formulate industry policies

• Attract responsible and sustainable investments

Realize transparent, standardized, and long-term mining governance

Truly transforming resource advantages into long-term development advantages.

Entering the practical stage on March 19th

After the project is launched, the "Democratic Republic of Congo National Window" activity will be launched on March 19th, officially promoting field exploration and laboratory research work nationwide.

The project is led by the National Geological Agency of Congo, in collaboration with relevant European institutions, with the goal of strengthening the value chain of key minerals, enhancing the attractiveness of the mining industry, and making geological resources an important driving force for sustainable growth.

Incorporate into the EU's global strategy, with Africa as a key region

This project is part of the EU's "Global Gateway" international cooperation strategy.

From 2021 to 2027, the European Union plans to invest 300 billion euros to support global sustainable development projects, with Africa as a priority region. Nearly half of the funds will be invested in Africa, covering multiple fields such as ecological transformation, digital development, economic growth, health, and education.
